My deep-rooted attachment to Lake
Martin goes back generations. My grandfather worked on Lake Martin's
construction in the 1920s and my wife, Helen's, family farmed the river
bottoms now covered by Lake Martin. My father was born near the lake in
Ourtown and returned to be the Greens Superintendent at Willow Point, the
premier golf course in the area.
Most of my childhood memories
revolve around Lake Martin: Picnics, fishing, boating, camping, and water
sports are all fond recollections. In fact, a youthful promise between my
wife and I was to retire on Lake Martin. Throughout a 25-year career in
sales and marketing, with moves to Montgomery, Miami, Chicago, Atlanta and
Birmingham, we returned to Lake Martin and kept our dream alive.
Because of the success in my
career at Progressive Farmer, the oldest magazine at Southern Progress
Corporation
(publishers of Southern Living, Cooking Light, Coastal Living,
Southern Accents, Sunset, and others), we were able to acquire our first
cabin on Lake Martin while living in Atlanta. It was a great time for our
family and we passed our love of Lake Martin to our children, Leah and
Greg. Throughout the years we bought and sold several times and now we
live fulltime in Windemere, one of Russell Land's premiere developments.
During my tenure at Progressive
Farmer, I was privileged to serve and lead on numerous Regional and
National boards: FFA, Agricultural Publishers Association, National
Agrimarketing Association, Farm Foundation, SCPA, and The Auburn
University Magazine Advisory Board to name a few. I am currently
privileged to serve as statewide Chairman for "The Campaign for 4-H".
Also, Helen and I worship at The First United Methodist Church of
Alexander City, AL.
